Geldrith's Channel Tutorial No1
Mention Channels to most Photoshopers and they run for the hills.
In my opinion channels are the workhorses of Photoshop, they are not that daunting and if you follow along you'll see that a lot can be achieved in a very short time.

Channels can be used for all sorts of things from Adjusting a photo to intricate cutting out of masks (and whispy hair).

Well I have been promicing some tutorials on channels for sometime now so Here we go.

In this tutorial I'll show how to create a Black and White photograph from a coloured one. Yes we all know that chainging the image mode to Greyscale makes a lovely Black and white picture but Greyscale images are a little..... Lifeless, don't you think.

Here's a way, using channels, to create a really professional looking Black and White photograph from a coloured one.

Okay the first thing we're going to do is import our colour photo
then select Image/Duplicate from the menu
Then resize the images side by side.

We are doing this so that you will have something to compare your results to.

Select the original image and goto Image/mode/greyscale and select Okay when asked about discarding colour information.

Now we have a lovely Greyscale (B&W) photograph but no....oooommph

Select your duplicate photograph and then select the channels tab.
Click the Red Channel, Green Channel & Blue Channel in turn to see if any look better or similar to the original.

My selection was the Red Channel for this tutorial, however yours may be different.
Next right click the channel icon or select the arrow at the side of the channels dock and pick duplicate channel.

In the duplicate channels requester go to the **ٍ**ٍ**ٍ**ٍ**ٍ**ٍ**ٍ**ٍ dropdown and select New.

Then press OK
Now we have a new picture which has a multi channel mode and we need to add a layer so goto Image/Mode/Greyscale

select the layers tab and Duplicate the background layer by dragging the background icon onto the duplicate layer button or by selecting Layer/Duplicate Layer from the main menu.

Next in the Layers mode selector, select a mode best suited to you picture, I used Soft Light but good results can be got from using Overlay/Multiply/Pinlight etc.

I Hope you find a use for this tutorial and find it informative.
Keep your eyes peeled for the next installment.

These are the results I got with my selections.
